CHAI Supports Safety in Place for Older Adults

Mrs. R., a 74-year-old widow, faced the risk of losing her home when it entered tax sale in May 2024. With an annual income of just $13,000, she was unaware of the Maryland Homeowner’s Tax Credit, which could have helped her keep up with her property taxes. Complicating matters, her home was listed under her maiden name, while her income documents reflected her married name. Fortunately, Mrs. R. reached out to CHAI’s Senior Home Repair & Benefits (SHRB) Program Manager who helped Mrs. R. retrieve her marriage license, correct the records, and apply for the tax credit for this year as well as the past three years—and her home was removed from tax sale. Subsequently, CHAI utilized Baltimore Regional Neighborhood Initiative (BRNI) funding to replace the roof over her back window and has applied for funding to install a ramp at the front of her home to provide much needed accessibility. Mrs. R. expressed heartfelt gratitude for CHAI’s assistance, sharing that the support has kept her safe in so many ways. CHAI is pleased to support older adults like Mrs. R. through our SHRB program, by connecting clients to resources that enable them to remain in their homes safely and independently.
