Preservation Project

Invest in affordable senior housing
for Northwest Baltimore
for Northwest Baltimore
The Opportunity
The Need is Urgent. The Solution is Clear
CHAI, a tenured Baltimore nonprofit, has developed over 1,700 units of affordable housing primarily for older adults in northwest Baltimore City and County. Now, CHAI is revitalizing 1,599 of its original units to secure them for decades to come.
The nation is grappling with how best to serve the rapidly aging Baby Boomer population. Investing in housing preservation offers a low risk, high impact opportunity to secure long-term stability for older adults, helping them achieve their goal to age in community as active and engaged members of the neighborhoods they call home.

The Impact
MEET
Francois

I have always lived in nice quality housing, so it’s great that I have been able to continue that as a senior on a fixed income.
The Final 10%
CHAI has a deep history of accessing
non-competitive public funding programs
as well as private funding from partners with
long-term dedication to investing in our work.
Thanks to these deep relationships and CHAl’s record of success, we forecast that we can
secure 90% of the necessary funds for our
15-year Preservation Project. This campaign
aims to secure the final 10% of funding needed
to complete CHAI’s Preservation Project.

Why Now?
Aging in community is becoming economically infeasible. Many older adults live on fixed incomes and are at risk of displacement as housing costs rise.
The solution? Renovation and modernization. Renovating takes advantage of the housing supply already in place, saving money, time, and resources compared to new construction. Our existing units have served the community for decades and by making improvements now, we ensure that they will last for decades to come.
