The Heart Behind the Wheel

July 9, 2026

In June, we celebrated a milestone in the growth of CHAIway, recognizing six active volunteer drivers who are helping the transportation program provide nearly 20 rides each month for older adults.  Before the event, riders were asked to share feedback that could be passed along to their volunteer drivers, and their responses underscored just how meaningful the service is. Riders described CHAIway as “so important for my independence,” said, “I don’t know what I would do without them,” and praised drivers as “kind, punctual, reliable and accommodating.” Another rider shared, “I can trust them and I know I am safe.” At the event, volunteers reflected on what motivates them to serve. Many said they enjoy helping people and appreciate CHAIway as an opportunity to give back to the community. One volunteer noted how much he genuinely cares about his riders. Volunteers also took time to thank CHAIway Program Manager, Jeffrey Arenberg, and described him as a pleasure to work with. Together, these dedicated volunteers provide far more than transportation—they offer connection, compassion, and independence.
