Supporting Home Retention for our Older Neighbors
When Ms. B, an older homeowner living on a fixed income, fell behind on her mortgage due to an increase in her monthly payment, she turned to CHAI for help. CHAI’s Senior Home Benefits Counselor worked with our Housing Counselor to conduct a deeper review of her mortgage. The counselors discovered that increases in property taxes and insurance had caused the payment spike. Together the CHAI team helped Ms. B resolve her insurance and tax issues, catch up on the mortgage arrears, and replenish her escrow. As a result, she was able to avoid foreclosure and bring her mortgage current. By serving as a trusted community resource, CHAI helped stabilize a home and supported a neighbor to age safely and confidently in her community.
