Specialized Help Illuminates the Path to Housing
As a HUD-certified Housing Counseling agency, we are reminded regularly of the critical need for this specialized service to help community members navigate the complex world of housing. We recently had the opportunity to assist a young woman with a developmental disability who was facing eviction. She had not understood the required steps to request approval for her service animal before her property manager discovered the pet. Although CHAI’s counselor worked with her physician to get the dog approved, the property manager denied her request for reasonable accommodation. In response, CHAI’s counselor made a direct referral to Legal Aid, which provided an attorney who helped her negotiate a dismissal, avoiding any detriment to her credit. CHAI was able to help prevent an eviction and ensure our client’s ability to rent in the future.
