NWLA’s Community Projects – Training to Transformation

Last year, CHAI established the Northwest Leadership Academy to develop new leaders and stimulate community-driven projects in northwest Baltimore. Participants learned about grassroots organizing and later utilized their training to plan and implement two projects to benefit Park Heights. The first — a community cleanup — was held in conjunction with Mayor Brandon Scott’s Cleanup Day of Service, and the second was an initiative to beautify the intersection of Park Heights Avenue and Northern Parkway. Activities included a special bench painting project with nationally known local artist Larry Poncho Brown. We are thrilled to announce that the project is now complete. The artist adorned the bright green bench with large Black Eyed Susans, the official flower of Maryland, beautifying the neighborhood and bringing cheer to passersby.
