Making Essential Repairs Possible for Older Homeowners

For many older adults living on fixed incomes, the challenge of maintaining their homes goes beyond knowing who to call when a repair is needed; they also face the challenge of finding a way to pay for it. That’s where CHAI’s Senior Home Repair and Benefits (SHRB) program makes all the difference, helping older homeowners remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their homes. Recently, a northwest couple needed significant repairs to the roof of their front porch to address safety concerns and prevent further deterioration. CHAI’s SHRB program helped diagnose, schedule, and partially fund the repair, but the total cost exceeded the assistance available through the SHRB program. Thanks to CHAI’s new Senior Home Repair Deferred Loan, a resource specially designed for CHAI’s SHRB clients, the couple was able to complete the repairs without taking on monthly loan payments. This new loan helps fill a critical gap when necessary repair costs exceed traditional funding limits, thus ensuring larger projects can still move forward. This first completed project shows how CHAI is expanding its support for older homeowners, helping them maintain their homes, preserve their independence, and continue aging in the homes and communities they love.
