Advancing Community Priorities in Annapolis

During Maryland’s 2026 legislation session which ended last month, CHAI’s efforts helped advance several housing and community development priorities of special importance to northwest Baltimore, through the passage of several bills that will benefit residents and neighborhoods. First, legislation promoting access to housing counseling services among first-time buyers of state funded housing was signed into law, reinforcing the importance of early intervention in helping residents avoid housing instability. Lawmakers also passed legislation to study the growing challenges facing aging condominium buildings, an important step toward preserving affordability, stability, and safety for older adults living on fixed incomes in buildings in need of repair. In addition to these statewide efforts, CHAI joined local partners in supporting community-centered provisions within the Pimlico legislation to help ensure surrounding neighborhoods remain part of future planning and investment. The session also brought important funding support for local priorities, including capital dollars for Fallstaff Apartments and programmatic support through the Maryland Department of Aging, helping position several key projects and initiatives for continued progress in the year ahead.
