A Message to Our Community
We are living in extraordinarily complex times. The feelings of this moment are hard and heavy – we feel sorrow and outrage, anger and fear, we feel worried and a bit lost. We understand parts of the long arc of American history that brings us to today. We struggle to make sense of what we know and we are humbled by the vast set of facts, experiences and circumstances we don’t know. Is it possible, at this hard, heavy and complicated moment, to also feel hope? And if so, where can we begin to find a basis for hope that is real? In the midst of a global health and financial crisis that seems a constant source of stress, we are reminded of a big, systemic issue that lives on the surface, just beneath the surface, in our midst all the time that should not ever be ignored and cannot now be ignored. We must begin our response by making space for open dialogue, for learning, and for growth. We should challenge ourselves to ask questions and listen to the answers. As our friends, neighbors and colleagues in the black community lead the way, we should follow, so we can move toward an opportunity to be part of systemic change. The road to equity in America is long. Our world is broken and there is much to do to on the path to a reality that matches our values. Our ethics teaches us that we are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are we free to desist from it. So we name the moment, we open our hearts and minds, and we begin.
